Pelicans

We're sitting inside our boat, listening to strange splashing sounds outside. We poke our heads out, and see a pack of 25 pelicans hunting for fish in the muddy water. How they manage to see anything, is beyond our understanding.

Pelicans have a peculiar way of catching fish. They fly above the water, then suddenly they drop straight down, like they are being shot dead. Unlike other diving birds, the pelicans are remarkably clumsy, making a big splash when they hit the surface. We don't know if they catch anything, but they must be getting something inside their big pouch under the beak.

Pelicans are very common in the Caribbean, almost like seagulls back home. But they look nothing like the Disney version of beautiful, white seabirds.
