Dublin - Lerwick (550 nm)
We're now moored in Lerwick, Shetland after four days at sea from Dublin. The trip was very uneventful, as we used the opportunity to ride on a calm weather window up to Shetland. A huge gale is predicted to hit the northern part of UK this weekend, so we didn't want to get stuck in that.
We sailed when we could, and we motored when the wind was too weak. Passing through the west coast of Scotland really sparked the ambitions to come back some time. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to stop at any harbours this time, which we regret. Next time, we could probably spend a year cruising around the UK and Ireland. The people and the scenery is really nice! It reminds us of Norway above the tree-line. 1 meter above sea level in Scotland is just like Norway 800 meters above the sea level. Old castles lines the shoreline. Scotland is definitely a place to explore more. The same goes for Ireland, which we found extremely delightful. Long distance sailors have a tendency to rush through Europe to get to the Caribbean, when Europe is just as nice and interesting to cruise around in (in the summertime, that is).
For S/Y Emma, the circle is now complete. We are back in the first harbour we came to outside of Norway two years ago, and it's also our last harbour before sailing home. It's our third visit in Lerwick. We really like the town and the island. It's going to be a sailing destination for us in many years to come.
Lerwick harbour is full of Norwegian boats. We counted ten today, and we met a couple of boats going south as we were headed north to Lerwick. Maybe they were going to the Caribbean. For us, the journey ends here. We're going to relax in Lerwick for a week, before Rune Sæbønes comes on board again next Thursday to join us on our final leg back to Norway. It's sad that the trip is coming to an end, but it will also be good to come home.
If the weather is nice, we'll probably arrive in Volda Småbåthamn on Saturday the 23rd of July.
