Boqueron
We have now been in the small town of Boquerón on the SW coast of Puerto Rico for over a week. Boquerón is a charming, little place. People from all over the island gather here every weekend for sunbathing on the beach during the day, and partying during the evening. From Thursday to Sunday, the town is full of music, food, drinks and people dancing in the streets.
This is one of the best spots for nightlife in the Caribbean. The town also has a very big LGBT scene, and lots of gay bars. We see the rainbow coloured flag everywhere.
The nightlife and drinking culture here is quite different from Norway. There's small bars/restaurants everywhere in the the town center. People buy drinks in plastic cups, which they can walk around in the streets with, and even into other bars. Only glass bottles are banned ($1000 fine!). There's live music everywhere, with Spanish rythms making people dance salsa in the streets. Most of the action is happening outside, not inside the bars. And everyone is behaving nice, as usual. We haven't seen a fight since we left Norway. Maybe we have something to learn here?
What we find somewhat weird and a bit disturbing, is that the whole family goes out on the town at night. Which means that small children of 3-4 years of age are playing games in the street amongst drunk people raving around. People pushing trolleys with small children into crowded bars around midnight is a common sight. Kristine is not pleased with this. Nightlife and bars should be for adults, not for small children.
Tomorrow we will move to another bay, Puerto Real, which lies just an hour north of Boquerón. There we will get ready for the passage to Cuba, which will take about four days.
